Kids Love It!
Reviewed By:  Shelley
I ran into this activity at a national conference in 2000, and have used it every semester since! This is so creative! The kids love having baby dragons, and with the egg and 'sperm' containing the alleles, it really shows the kids how meiosis works. The kids get so excited, that while they are doing the activity, you can hear "Oh! I hope my dragon is fire-breathing!" "Ahh, MAN! I got a GIRL!!!" Since it is based on a fictional organism, there are no gripes about how it does or does not align with their preconceived notions. The kids just get into the activity and have a blast. It is great for showing how genotype determines phenotype. This is just an awesome activity. You can 'rig' it so that everybody gets the same results (for easy grading), but it's better if everyone gets something different, so that kids won't cheat (and it's a LOT more fun). I did rig it so that every dragon was fire-breathing, because it is such a big deal to the kids. This is an activity they remember for a long time. . .
