Introduce the basic concepts of atomic numbers and atomic weights to identify elements and isotopes using this hands-on activity. Challenge your students to identify the element by counting the protons and finding the atomic number. Then add neutrons to teach atomic weight and isotopes. When this concept is mastered, add the electron structure and teach how to identify cations, anions, and neutral atoms. You can build dozens of different elements with the 400 protons and neutrons. Perform the demonstration repeatedly and customize it to best suit your teaching style. Student handouts and worksheets are included.

A simple activity that is outlined in the instructions in the kit is to set up lab stations around the classroom and have students go around and identify the different nuclei based on the number of protons and neutrons. A sheet of electron diagrams is also included which can be used to begin a discussion about ions.
